who-1

The directory is for anyone who practises or supports democratic education in the UK, from democratic schools run by weekly whole school meetings, to class teachers in comprehensive schools working to democratise their classrooms where they can.

The directory is for you if you are supporting the realisation of the following ideals:

  • Members of a learning community should be given a genuine say in decision making.
  • Students should be allowed to follow their own interests and learn because they wish to.
  • By promoting a culture of respecting difference and tolerance we can enable learning communities to work collaboratively and engage in constructive collective decision-making.
  • Students should be allowed to make choices which have a real impact on their everyday lives.
  • Sound learning and responsible citizenship are rooted in equality and respect in and out of the classroom.

Education is much more than just teachers and schools. We would encourage a huge range of individuals and organisations to join up. For the purposes of the directory your role and status, or the scale of your school, project or organisation are unimportant. It is the values and beliefs you apply to your interactions with education which count.
